WINTERBOURNE ABBAS AND WINTERBOURNE STEEPLETON PARISH COUNCIL - 17th May 2010
The Annual Parish Council Meeting was held in the Village School at Winterbourne Abbas on 17th May 2010.
Mr Cedric Mould was re-elected as Chairman until the next Annual Meeting of the Parish Council in 2011. Mr Richard Crumbleholme was elected as vice-chairman for the same period.
The proposal to restrict parking, in the interest of highway safety, along a stretch of theB3159 road from its junction with the A3 5 for a specified distance towards Winterbourne Steepleton as previously reported has been approved by Dorset County Council. The necessary road markings and signage will be put in place in the near future.
The second pedestrian crossing has been installed on the A3 5 near the Coach and Horses Inn and a formal bus stop has also been provided on the north side of the A35 near Westway. This work is appreciated but does not solve the problem of gaining access to the new pedestrian crossing from Butt Farm Close. Ideas of forming a link along land within the boundaries of Butt Farm Close to the crossing have been considered but both involve the co-operation of several different landowners. The Parish Council have resolved to continue to press for the provision of a footpath link running parallel to the A35 from Butt Farm Close to the new pedestrian crossing.
Winterbourne Steepleton has been entered into this year's Tidy Village Competition and the Parish Council will appreciate help to pick up litter and generally keep the village tidy.
Mr David Rumney has resigned for personal reasons as a Parish Councillor representing Winterbourne Abbas. He was thanked for his efforts during his period as a Councillor for the area and wished all the best for the future.
The Parish Council continues to look for land close to the villages suitable for use as allotments. If you have or know of a suitable area of land please contact the Chairman or Clerk of the Parish Council.
The next scheduled meeting of the Parish Council will be on 19th July 2010 at the Winterbourne Valley School starting at 7.30pm.
Stephen Slade, Parish Clerk
ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
(Abbotsbury & Portesham Branch)
Special Event:
“On Sunday 6th June at 3pm the Branch is laying up our old Standard and dedicating the present one in St. Peter’s Church, Portesham. This will be a significant event in the 63 year history of our Branch. I do hope that you will attend the service, after which the Dorset County RBL Standard, together with our own and others will be paraded, marching from the church to the village hall. Members are invited to join the parade following behind the Standards. Refreshments will be available in the village hall afterwards. Please come along in numbers to support this prestigious event and help make the day a success. Thank you.”
John Perry, Chairman
Welfare:
Last year the County welfare department was approached for help by an ex-serviceman whose life has been shattered by PTSD. The simple purchase of a laptop computer let him order his food on line and keep in touch with friends and family. He was just one of 600 people in Dorset who asked the Legion for help last year. We spent more than £750,000 on support. The Poppy Appeal is helping to make a real difference to people’s lives, helping our heroes from past and present campaigns - as well as supporting their families who are so often also affected when their loved ones return home requiring physical, financial or emotional support.
Saturday 26th June is Armed Forces Day. The Blue Pool, Wareham, is offering free admission to members of the armed forces and RBL Members producing a current Membership Card (this includes other members of the same family).
Friday, 23rd July Our Branch Annual BBQ takes place on Portesham Village Hall Patio. This is an open event to which we extend an invitation for you to see what a happy bunch we are - perhaps it will entice you to join us permanently!
5th. August at Strangways Hall, Abbotsbury A talk by Joyce FANNON talk on "Fowell Buxton" pioneer in the abolition of slavery.
