LENT NEWS 2010
SHROVE TUESDAY
Pancake party for all ages in the village hall. Food and drink prepared and served by a team of helpers with lots of fun chatter and laughter.
A slide show of the meaning of Lent (which begins on Wednesday) and an explanation of the preparing of the Ashes, which are made by burning last years Palm crosses. The ash is purified with incense and mixed with Holy Water.
Pancake races with teams of mixed ability racing the length of the hall and back tossing the pancake three times each way.
A most enjoyable fun evening.
ASH WEDNESDAY
The first day of Lent a time for reflection on how we are using our God given gifts to the greatest effect.
A Eucharist Service for the Benefice at Martinstown Church with an invitation to receive the sign of the cross with the ashes on the forehead (optional) an outward sign of our repentance and dependance on God.
We were pleased to welcome the Rev Richard Adams to preach at this service.
The Theme `Our Journey of Faith Hope and Charity'. The days of Lent are a time for reflection and 'giving up` for example Chocolate or Biscuits. Most people think that Lent has forty days but in fact it is a period of forty six days, which of course includes six Sundays.
As Sunday is counted as a celebration of the resurection nothing need be 'given up`.
FRIDAY LENT LUNCHES
Lent lunches at the Village Hall consisted of home made soup, Ploughman`s lunches and tea or coffee – all for £3.50. The money is to be forwarded to the 2010 Parish charities.
