LATEST NEWS FROM MCC
Martinstown Cricket Club Youth Section
21 July 2010
Dear parents/guardians,
The youth season is drawing to a close with only a few games remaining. The final youth practice session for softball, under 11/13 will be Wednesday 21 July. Under 15s will have their final session Friday 23 July.
Other cricket activities
However the cricket season do not end there. There are a number of additional cricket activities in the area:
Windball World Cup. On Friday 20 August, Martinstown CC are running a Windball World Cup in the afternoon (2:00 – 7:00/7:30). This will be include by a BBQ. Four mixed aged teams from softball through to under 13 compete against each other, with the emphasis on players bowling/batting against players in the opposition side the same age. To express an interest/further info, please email Jon Nichols (jnic889565@aol.com) by 28 July 2010.
In early 2011 we will run winter practice sessions. Details will follow later, however please make sure you’ve registered your contact details with the club so we can contact you about future cricket events!
Dorchester YMCA are running a week long (2-6 August) cricket training camp for most ages. These sessions are run by Sean Fitzgearld, a Level 3 coach. Please contact Dorchester YMCA on 01305 266 467 for further information.
The Wessex Cricket Academy offer specialist (often one-on-one), coaching throughout the year. The Wessex Cricket Academy operate in several locations, including St Osmunds leisure centre in Dorchester. If you want to significant improvements to your game, then this is a route to take. Several of our players have been, or are, in the Academy and tend to be our better players. Wessex also hold group sessions at Redlands in Weymouth for younger players. Please visit http://wessexcricketdorset.com for more information.
Later in the year we will be asked by the West Dorset Head Coach to select players to send forward to District trials (there are four districts in Dorset, who compete against each other in indoor and outdoor games). The best players from the Districts are sent for County trials. Districts train during the winter, most likely at St Osmunds.
Managers & Coaches
For 2011 we will need to find mums/dads/guardians to be team managers. As you have no doubt seen, we have a good number of coaches (always need more!), but we will need people to ‘manage’ the sides. Managing and/or coaching a team does not take much time each and can be very rewarding, plus you are supported by other club members/ parents/guardians and coaches so you are not alone! We cannot play youth games without managers.
The club are prepared to pay for a coaching qualification (not too taxing!) if you want to join us as a coach, although a coaching qualification is not a necessity as a manager. Please speak to any of the coaches or managers for further information or to express an interest in joining the crew!
Future softball sessions will run from 6 until 7 as younger players often struggle to concentrate. If the session is going well, then we may go until 7:15, but please be ready to collect your child at 7. If parents/guardians would like to join us, that would be great and helps ‘crowd control’ too!
We hope that you’ve enjoyed playing cricket at Martinstown as that is our main aim. Remember to recommend us to friends and family for 2011!

At their end of season presentation evening, hosted at The Brewers Arms, 50 members of the cricket club turned out to find out who had won the season’s trophies. Introducing the presentations, Club Captain, John O’Brien thanked all those who helped out in so many different ways – members of the Committee, tea ladies, fund raisers, ground staff and supporters. Chris O’Brien then presented the awards as follows:
Best Bowler – Liam Banfield
Best Batsman – Tom Adams
Best All rounder – Danny Dancer
Young Player of the Year – Liam Moss
President’s “Spirit” Award – Ed Nichols
“Champagne Moment” – Des Evans
Chris was then surprised to find herself the recipient of the “Clubman” of the Year award for her work over the last ten years raising money with her fruit and vegetable stall in the village.
A special award was made to David Ennals as he retires from captaining the Non League side after many years, and a gift was given to Jon Nichols for his continuing hard work in making the Youth section the success it is today. Bouquets of flowers were presented to Leanne and Sally for their long suffering toleration of their partners’ dedication to the cricket club, to Jane Ennals for her support to David and the Club over the years and to Rachel Bailey for her dedication to keeping an immaculate score book.
By the time this goes to press, the youngsters will have packed bags at Waitrose to earn funds for the club, and hopefully, several older members will have met for the annual Boxing Day walk. Please watch out for notices of our forthcoming fund raising activities in 2010, and we would welcome your support.
2010 sees the Club fielding two Saturday League sides, two Evening League sides, a Non League Sunday side and four Youth teams. Hopefully fixtures will be published here or on notice boards in the village – we have a lovely pitch and pavilion, so please feel free to come along and support the teams.
