LATEST CRICKET CLUB NEWS

Dear Cricketers, Parents and Supporters,

My apologies for being rather late out of hibernation this year. Pre-season MCC indoor training sadly has not been possible, largely because St Osmund's hall was booked out. Happily this was mainly down to increased cricket activity by the Wessex Cricket School, and I hope many of you took advantage of this. I know many have been involved in the District programme, in which Lee House has been coaching. We have also played in the Redlands Indoor League, though there were not many matches.

The pavilion and ground at Ashton will be put into commission with a working party on Saturday 5th April. Serious volunteers will be very welcome on the day, but leave the bat and ball at home! Thereafter the field will be open for use, if conditions allow; use your common sense and stay off the grass if the ground is too slippery or soft. As always, safety first; if you use a hard ball a batter MUST wear full protection.

We are again entering three teams in the West Dorset League, at U11, U13 and U15. We are very fortunate this year to have a new manager for the U15s, Eliot Dunsworth, who has previously run junior cricket at Beaminster. It was always a pleasure to play his teams, and I am sure we will all appreciate his experience, and dry sense of humour. Usually, U11s will play on Mondays, U13s Thursdays and U15s Tuesdays. I am attaching the current fixtures programme for information, BUT it must be treated as provisional at this stage as there are bound to be clashes with adult fixtures, which we will sort out as soon as possible. Incidentally, we have entered a second team in the Dorchester Evening League, largely to give our junior players of any age a chance to move on to more challenging cricket as soon as they are ready.

Training nights will be, as before, Wednesdays 6.00-7.30 for U11 and U13, Fridays 5.00-6.30 for U15 (after which, by prior agreement, they may continue with the adults). Weather permitting, the first session for U11/13 will be on Wed 16th April, and for U15 Friday 11th April. Please use your own good judgement about weather on training nights; if it pours all day we will not meet; two or three hours of drying breeze after rain and we may well be ok. The considerations are your comfort and safety, and looking after that hardworking grass.

I am pleased to say that costs for the year are unchanged; junior membership £15, match fee for all Club games £2, no charge for training nights.

We are always grateful for any help with coaching, scoring and umpiring. If anyone you know would be interested, the Dorset Cricket Board has organised an 'Introductory Course' for potential volunteers, at the Bridport Leisure Centre on Thursday 17th April. This could lead on to a Level One Coach course, on several dates in May and June. Contact Keith Brewer at the Dorset Cricket Centre (01202 470852).

Please check with all Martinstown juniors you know that they have received this, and if not encourage them to get in touch and renew email contact.

Finally a reminder to keep in touch through the Club website at http://martinstown.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp , register for updates and join in the forum discussions. There is also a Facebook site I couldn't possibly recommend, at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2387254441

MARTINSTOWN CRICKET CLUB
LATEST NEWS

As we come towards the end of another season, the Cricket Club can report that it has once again been a very successful one. The Saturday League team, having been promoted last year, appear to be heading for yet another promotion. The Evening League first team – yes, we now have two Evening League teams! – has also been highly successful, and reached the final of the Knock Out cup which unfortunately they lost, but by the narrowest of margins. The new second team, aiming to provide competitive cricket for more youngsters, has not disgraced itself. The Sunday friendly team has had more fixtures than ever this season, and the Youth teams continue to gain experience whilst having fun.

Many of you in the Valley will by now be aware that we have a project going forward to provide a grass strip, rather than an artificial wicket. Because of the water supply at Ashton, we are also intending to put in our own Borehole supply as well. All this costs a lot of money, and we have been busy all summer trying to accumulate funds to progress. One of our methods is to issue Bonds(at £100 each). People in the community have been exceedingly generous so far in purchasing these Bonds, and if there is anyone else who would like to so do, or would like further information, please contact me (details below). If you feel that £100 is too much to afford, then there is no reason why several folks shouldn’t club together to purchase one.

Although this is called the Martinstown Cricket Club (MCC for short!), it has always been open to the entire Winterbourne Valley, and beyond. ( Why should we want to leave behind such a glorious set of initials? Our website is therealmcc!) In fact, the Club Captain, the Evening League Captain and the Saturday League Captain all live in Steepleton, the secretaries live in Winterbourne Abbas, and the Club scorer/membership secretary also came from Winterbourne Abbas! We have a facility in a wonderful setting and still provide the best teas on the circuit.

There are over 50 youngsters on our books and we take any age and ability and try to provide them with some coaching, competition and fun. The provision of a grass strip to play on will offer them the chance to develop better cricketing skills. In this day and age when so many youngsters are getting slated for being out of control, rude and lazy, we can show you a bunch who are none of those.
In addition to just asking for money, we are also about to start fundraising in earnest, so please watch out for any adverts about our events and try and support us.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Pat Bailey, Secretary,

Tom Adams
has been voted The Brewers Arms - Martinstown Cricket Club player of the month for May. The burly right hand batsman, who opens the batting in the evening league, was Martinstowns most prolific player for May, scoring 306 runs at an average of 44 including 3 half centuries. His highest score for May was 83 not out in a Saturday fixture against Wareham. His fine form has seen Martinstown reach the quarter finals of the Evening League knock out cup, and his Saturday side are presently top of the league.

Chris Read, Martinstown CC First XI Evening League captain, said "Tom has been absolutely brilliant; he has taken the fight to the opposition on every occasion with his aggressive style. He thoroughly deserves this award, not just because of his batting, but because he is a fine team player who is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needs it."

Other nominations for the award were batting allrounder Conor Ross (Second Evening League team nomination • Paul Milverton and Stuart Dawson), opening bowler Chris Read (Saturday captains nomination • Lee House) and opening batsman/keeper Ed Nichols (Sunday captains nomination • David Ennals).

Chris continues "It was very difficult to select a winner, all the adult captains within the club nominate a player, and nominating players was hard enough without having to select the overall winner! The award is not just about performance, but includes what the player has done for the club and the team. All the nominated players have had a great start to the season, and this shows what depth we have, but Tom has been the most consistent and dangerous. I would like to thank John and Jackie at The Brewers Arms of Martinstown for sponsoring this award and providing us with such fine hospitality."
